| There's quite a lot in this one - here are the details:
**Gift a $10 coupon All Paid users will be able to invite 10 friends to purchase a Paid Account with a $10 discount. This can be found in the header under Friends -> Holiday promotion
**Journal Statistics Journal Statistics and My Guests have arrived! They can be found in the header under Journal -> My Stats: Full Statistics are reserved for Paid users and My Guests are for everyone!
**New community moderation setting Maintainers of communities which allow unmoderated posting can now choose to moderate only entries containing links to non-whitelisted domains. The new setting (if you're the maintainer of a community) can be found at Manage Communities -> Settings -> Community Moderation. The whitelist for the community is pre-populated with "trusted" sites, and the maintainer can add and manage the list as well.

**Free Sponsored v-gifts For one week (December 16-23rd), a selection of free v-gifts will be available. Since they're from a Sponsor (3M TMI App), only Basic and Plus users will see it in the v-gift store. Paid and Permanent users can find it by clicking here.
Bugfixes and other changes:- New holiday header!
- The new text search is now the default link in the header
- Scrapbook status should now correctly follow journal status when a journal is deleted, purged, or suspended (LJSV-693)
- When switching from the HTML editor to the Rich Text editor the cursor now stays where it was (LJSV-487)
- Firefox spellcheck (and all browser-native context menus) now work in the RTE (LJSV-571)
- The RTE no longer inserts extra list items when an lj-cut is placed (LJSV-583)
- The pop-up item "Type your cut contents here" once again appears when the lj-cut function is used before highlight text to go under the cut (LJSV-792)
- Added language-stripping to the HTML Post an Entry form (LJSV-301)
- Long entries now display properly in A Novel Conundrum style (LJSV-623)
- Indentations and spaces now work as expected in the RTE (LJSV-797)
- Problems between Safari and the RTE have been fixed (LJSV-648)
- Added support for internal tagging of Support Requests (LJSV-790)
- The Rich Text Editor has been language-stripped for translation (LJSV-830)
- The initial setup for TxtLJ now happens on the TxtLJ setup page (subsequent changes can then be made on the Mobile settings page)
- Implemented referer check in the mogupic script - thank you, DW! (LJSV-500/DW-888)
Known Issue: Maintainers of unmoderated communities may see the radio button for the new community moderation setting checked. However, it is not on by default; this is a bug. The moderation settings will remain unchanged until the Maintainer clicks "Save changes". | comments: 116 comments or Leave a comment |

My friend Karen Lillis, who is completing her library sciences Master's degree at Pitt, put together this pair of videos describing how to use the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in order to access information.
She used Allen Ginsberg's HOWL as the 'research object'. She's assembled a great set of resources for navigating the CLP for more info, and, a ton of great info about the poem itself.
Interviews with the staff are fabulous as well ...

| I wish people would remember that the posted speed limit on Bigelow Blvd is 35 mph. I know this because I got pulled over there once for speeding and since then I've been really careful. But I am getting really tired of going 45 in a 35mph zone and still having the people who want to go 60 tailgating, blinking their lights and honking at me to go faster just because I happen to be in the left lane. I am in the left lane because I am planning to cross the Liberty Bridge and I need to be in the left lane in order to do so. This is not the fast lane of a highway. It's a city street with a posted speed limit of 35, which I happen to be driving at 40-45. I drive it at 10 miles over the limit because otherwise I think I would have another car in my backseat.
This happens every day and I'm getting really tired of it. | comments: 14 comments or Leave a comment |
| | Has anyone here had an oriental rug cleaned by a local business? If so, can you give me an idea of how it went, who did it, and what the cost was? Thanks! | comments: 6 comments or Leave a comment |
| I have multiple sclerosis and have been seeing Dr. Galen Mitchell at the MS Center and Neurology Clinic at UPMC in the Kaufman building for about eight years now. At first he was fantastic - good office staff, plenty of individual time, it was great. Now, however, his clinic has gone significantly downhill. The office staff kind of sucks, scheduling is months out, and I don't get anything productive done at visits because I wind up seeing a new Resident every time I'm there, so I spend the majority of my visit re-re-re-re-re-telling my whole life story rather than discussing the actual problems I'm having, and in the end I get to see Dr. Mitchell himself for about five minutes where he gives me a prescription and then pretty much kicks me out. We won't even go into how late they're always running...
I need a new neurologist. I'm looking for recommendations for someone with the following criteria:
• Takes UPMC insurance (but doesn't need to be a part of UPMC) • Specializes in MS • Sees patients directly or has patients assigned to long-term nurses who get to know their patients rather than rotating Residents • Easily accessible by bus from Oakland
Thanks so much! | comments: 17 comments or Leave a comment |

| | Has anyone seen this in or around the city? It was discontinued this year, but other areas still have some. I haven't been able to find any in Pittsburgh, but there might be places I haven't looked. If you know of a place that sells it please let me know, that stuff is fantastic!! | comments: 3 comments or Leave a comment |
| I'm looking for some help finding the book "summer with stanley" featuring the pens summer photos with the cup. I know I can purchase it online from the trib, but I'd rather buy it in person if possible. So my fellow burghers, has anyone spotted it somewhere around town?
thanks in advance | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |
| I guess it's about time for an update to State-of-the-Mgad:
I've began to move into a more permanent apartment. This one was just a temporary "short-term lease to get the hell out of Kat's ASAP" place. It's nice. It's also inconvenient for nearly everything except dropping Sam at work in the mornings. Err- side note!
Before I continue, for 1 month that's mostly over (11/23 to 12/23), my sister Samantha is bereft of a license because she had a "blew exactly at the limit" DUI over a year ago. The only other legal problems she's had were speeding tickets, the latest of those was roughly seven years ago. Thus, as she lives with me, I am her chauffeur for the month. She is exceedingly grateful and even insists on my using her car, rather than my own, any time I am driving her more than a few miles. I may freely borrow it as needed.
Return! Sam's work place is essentially on the way to mine. However, I am further-than-I'd like from work, downtown, and Brad. There is also no bus by my current apartment, which would make continuing roommate-without-car annoying, but there is one by my new place. It's also $100/month cheaper than my current. I've got the keys, utilities are set up, and I've got a decent amount of stuff packed. Moving two people yourself is annoying, though Brad has offered to help (as have a few friends from work.)
My boyfriend, by the by, continues to be awesome & perfect. Michael Bradley Humphrey is sweet, kind, tries his best to take care of me, convinced I'm a saint, and just generally amazing. He also wants to spend most every free minute with me & we're quitting smoking together (him, cigarettes). Sam likes him. He's gonna go up to DC to meet with Mr. Tommy & Ms. Bethany, Annie, Dan, & whoever else we likely see up there.
I've gotten a Christmas bonus & raise, full health & dental benefits, and I now have life insurance. My company apparently supports Health Benefits for Domestic Partners, largely because the VP of all things Technical (who used to be #2 of the company before it tried to make a profit & we got a HR department) is really really flamingly gay. Kyle may be on my health plan if he pays for it.
Oh yeah. Kyle's moving in End-of-January. This played a big part in making sure I have a bus line run by my place. Made it #2 priority (after "make really sure you can afford this on your own, if it comes down to it"). Sam's only staying in Raleigh if her house in Missouri has sold before Kyle moves in- Despite making twice what I do, she can't afford rent & mortgage & two sets of bills AND live the way she was used with just one.
Finally- funny story: Kat borrowed my car Tuesday because her Caddy was in the shop. She couldn't afford repairs while Dad was out of town, so she just... held on to it. Kept saying she was too busy, she couldn't get her car back possibly, etc. Spent eight hours working on a "for fun" art project and then five more hanging out with friends planning a trip to Vegas in one day, just kept saying "Sure, I'll leave in a minute" or for the two hours I actually showed up "sure, I'm on my way out the door, just gotta do this one little thing" and then forgetting I'm there while she goes back to her friends. Eventually says she'll do it first thing tomorrow, only when tomorrow runs around & I call she's crying because she has a final in two hours and hasn't had a free moment to study all week and how can I be so cruel and immature to expect her to fail a class just so I can have a car a little earlier and (blah blah blah, I point out the "thirteen hours of painting and friends yesterday" and she starts shouting & cursing). Skip the rest of the day, Dad gets back in town Thursday night, so Friday morning I get a text that my car is at the Cadillac Dealership. This is fortunately almost on Brad's way back home, so he graciously drops me off there.
On inspection, the car is fine. My first comment was "Well, there are mushrooms in the glove box, but at least she had the courtesy to fill up the tank." | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |
| If anyone wonders why I hate Apple so much, here is a clue.
Apple Macbook Intel Core Duo Processor 2G memory 250G hard drive built in webcam and microphone Wireless N tech 13" widescreen NVidia GeForce 9400 graphics 7 hours purported battery life 2 USB ports PRICE: $999.99
Gateway ECS Model laptop Intel Core Duo Processor 3G memory 250G hard drive built in webcam and microphone Wireless N tech 15.6" widescreen ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics 5.4 hours purported battery life 4 USB ports PRICE: $399.99
In case you're too lazy to read and compare, I will summarize for you.
That Gateway thar has the same processor, the same size hard drive, the same in built webcamming features, the same wireless setup, and a comparable graphics card. It has MORE memory, a BIGGER screen, and MORE USB ports for the sacrifice of 1.6 hours of battery life. And it costs $600 less. It's not even like I can say these are the same computer and the latter costs less. The non-Macbook is actually a bit better.
Furthermore, there are models available at Best Buy which blow both of these out of the water and which STILL cost several hundred dollars less than the Macbook, let alone the Macbook Pro ($1,499.99) which would be the better choice for a comparison.
Apple products all come with the Elitist Bastard Tax applied, which is approximately 200% given the data.
To summarize all, unless you are terribly rich and fond of throwing money out the window of your car just because you like the way it flutters in the wind when viewed from the side mirrors - if you buy one, I will stab you. Out of mercy. And then I will sell it. To someone I hate. And maybe use the money to pay for your funeral. Maybe not. You might not deserve one anymore. Okay, that's a bit harsh. | comments: 11 comments or Leave a comment |
